Nahum
means “Comforter” in Hebrew. It is written between 626-612 BC as per Bible
Scholars. The native
city of Nahum was Elkosh, near the Lake of Galilee. The name Capernaum means
literally “the village of Nahum.” He lived about 150
years after Jonah, who also had been especially concerned with the sins and
doom of Nineveh. Nineveh is the oldest and most populous city of the ancient
Assyrian empire, situated on the east bank of the Tigris River and encircled by
the modern city of Mosul, Iraq.
There
are three chapters in the books of Nahum. The first chapter has 14 verses describing
the Judgement of Nineveh through the attributes of Adonai Elohim
Jehovah. Adonai is Jealous and avenging GOD, slow to anger and great in Power,
a refuge in the day of the distress. Before his Anger, no kingdom can stand. Who
can withstand HIS burning anger? Nineveh will be cut off with all the idol and
metal image which they worship. They are to become worthless in the presence of the Lord.
The second chapter begins with the prophecy of the Messiah, the first verse of the chapter
“Behold, upon the mountains are the feet of him bringing the good news,
proclaiming Shalom”, (this Prophecy was fulfilled by Adonai Yeshua our Messiah).
Further 13 verses describe “Devastation of Nineveh”, the cutting off
Belial, (The word means worthless in Hebrew) In the Old Testament, the
word appears 20 plus times. Interestingly enough, most of the instances don’t
refer to a specific being. Belial appears to be a spirit or personification of
evil through people. Adonai Elohim will fight for his chosen one – Jacob’s
descendant’s ISRAEL. What is erected will be exiled and carried away, Nineveh
will become empty, desolate, waste, as Adonai Elohim is against it.
The last
Chapter describes the Woe to Nineveh- the humiliation of the Harlot, full of
deceit, full of plunder. Due to many fornications, sorceries, Adonai Elohim
will show her nakedness and disgrace to nations, setting up a spectacle. Her
ally’s- Cush, Egypt, Put and Libya could not save her. Her people will become like women, gates of her
land are wide open to enemies. Their fire will devour her, the sword will cut her
off, devouring her like locusts. The chapter ends stating there is no escape
from the wrath of Adonai Elohim; no cure for her brokenness, her wound is severe, all
who hear the report about her, clap over her.
The prophecy mentioned in the first
verse of chapter 2 of this book is quoted by Apostle Paul in his letter to
Romans chapter 10 verse 15 - And how
shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful
are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of
good things!"
When
Peter goes to Cornelius in the book of Acts chapter 10 verse 36 -You know the message He sent to sons of
Israel, proclaiming shalom
through Messiah Yeshua—He is Lord of all.
Even the
most powerful nations, cities on earth are no match for Adonai Yeshua our Messiah. Neither is the biggest problem in
our individual lives as our Comforter Adonai Yeshua is fighting the battle for
us. HE guarantees our SHALOM, comfort.
COMFORTER
Adonai Lord Yeshua our Messiah is coming
